As Proteus Document Development & Design, Barbara Kelly has done a variety of contract communications work. The list below contains a cross-section of work she has done for a variety of clients. K’ómoks First Nation Treaty

Barbara works closely with Melissa Quocksister the communications member of the K’ómoks First Nation Treaty Team. Barbara works with her translating and editing complex legal and financial language into Plain Language. Along with language, she  assists with planning, designing, and creating documents in a number of formats for a variety of communications tools, including the website, newsletters, booklet, audio, jpeg, and video. Barbara also assists members in learning new software applications such as Adobe InDesign CS5 and Content Management Systems and their associated editors.

Strathcona Nordic Ski Club

Barbara became the Communications Director of the Strathcona Nordic Ski Club (SNSC) in October 2009.  She created a Communication Plan for them as a tool to help them achieve their strategic goals. As part of the plan, she created a new website for SNSC to showcase the vibrancy and success of their programs and to include more web 2.0 participation from the membership. Barbara also regularly writes news stories about the SNSC for Vancouver Island newspapers in Canadian Press style. In order to make use of the SNSC’s talented professional coach, she is also creating a series of short ski videos that cover topics such as nordic ski technique, training drills, and gear.

Bluestream XML Content Solutions

Barbara was a key member of the document project team. She wrote structured content for a user’s guide for Bluestream’s XDocs Explorer 2.0  CMS and wrote an accompanying XXE Guide. Barbara tested the developing software and the documentation. She worked remotely from her office on this project.

North Island College, College and Community Relations

As a contractor, Barbara researched, wrote, edited, and laid out a variety of internal and external North Island College (NIC ) publications, including issues of the NIC News employee newsletter, issues of the North Island College Foundation newsletter, NIC North, and the 2009 North Island College Awards booklets.

Natasha Design House

For Natasha Design House (NDH), Barbara wrote 6-panel comic scripts to introduce new clients to a process and promote the business. She also edited a book, wrote some web and brochure copy, and laid out a calendar for NDH.

University of Saskatchewan, Department of Graduate Studies

Working from a remote location, Barbara copy-edited two PhD dissertations and an academic paper for the University of Saskatchewan, Department of Graduate Studies in the fields of Nursing and Native Studies.

Plum Midwifery

Barbara copy-edited a Master’s thesis for a midwifery student and then later substantive-edited the Master’s thesis for publication in an academic journal, which entailed cutting the content by 50% without losing meaning and included reformatting the entire thesis to a different set of style guidelines.

Indigo Lounge

Barbara researched, designed, wrote and edited the Indigo Lounge Handbook, which is an employee guide to company brand as well as the procedures.

Options for Sexual Health BC

Barbara researched and outlined the 67-page Options for Sexual Health BC Clinic Orientation Manual and wrote sections of the manual, which is still in use in more than 50 clinics in BC. She received the 2006 Executive Director’s Award of Excellence for the work.
